This volume contains the presentations of the 27th Symposium of the Collegium Internationale Allergologicum (Curaçao, 1-6 May 2008).

The Collegium is a unique organization of the world’s most prominent physicians and scientists in the field of allergy and clinical immunology. As a result, the science presented at the biennial symposia of the Collegium is considered the most late-breaking information available.

With the enormous research linking both genetic predisposition and environmental factors to the pathogenesis of allergic disorders, the 2008 meeting was devoted to the theme “Environmental and Genetic Factors in Allergy and Clinical Immunology”.

In this context, the meeting provided definitive proof of the relevance and heterogeneity of genetic background in various allergic conditions. In addition, the complex role of microbial infections in the triggering and exacerbation of allergic diseases clearly emerged. Novel and conventional effector cells of allergic inflammation were extensively discussed and critically re-evaluated: macrophages and dendritic cells together with different populations of lymphocytes were protagonists, while mast cells, basophils and eosinophils were shown to be associated with certain aspects of tissue remodelling and angiogenesis.

Many contributions highlighted the molecular characterization of several allergens and their possible therapeutic manipulation. In this scenario, novel forms of immunotherapy of allergic disorders were shown to be safe and clinically effective. The excellent presentations and the timeliness of the subject matter generated much informed discussion.

This volume stands in a long tradition of monographs featuring the highlights of allergy and clinical immunology research over the decades.
